
About NIACE
NIACE the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, is the national voluntary organisation for adult learners and adult learning. An educational charity, NIACE exists to engage more and different adults in better quality learning of all kinds.
NIACE has a well established regional team with dedicated lead officers and literacy, language and numeracy specialists in each English region. NIACE in the West Midlands.
The Regional Development Officers work closely with strategic agencies, funding bodies, other regional and sub-regional organisations and local learning providers. They have credibility in the different sectors, extensive networks of contacts and huge amounts of regional data and intelligence. They can also generate high levels of stakeholder and user participation as well as support for research activity.
There is a Mental Health Programme Officer in each region. Their role is to promote the development of good practice in providing learning opportunities for adults with mental health difficulties and support practitioner networks to develop and disseminate this work.
NIACE co-ordinates Adult Learners’ Week in each region and supports regional celebrations of learning.

The role of the Development Officers based in each of the English regions is to:
laise with and advise regional strategic bodies on national and regional policies as they affect learning for adults in all sectors.
sit on regional strategic bodies, including those concerned with skills, urban and rural regeneration, and sustainability and equality issues;
disseminate research findings;
undertake research, development and consultancy;
undertake capacity building initiatives;
support providers of adult learning in the regions;
organise seminars, conferences and networks to promote and disseminate excellent practice across all aspects of adult learning;
maintain a database of regional organisations and contacts.
