Skills for Life Skills for Life is the Government’s strategy to tackle poor literacy, language and numeracy. The need to address these skills is driven by social inclusion and economic perspectives, and from its inception Skills for Life has sought to address these twin agendas. It recognises that employees with enhanced skills are more likely to remain in employment, progress at work and adapt to changing skills needs, and that a population with more developed literacy, language and numeracy skills will be healthier, wealthier and more active citizens.
The 3 main aims of the Skills for Life Strategy are to:
• boost demand – increase the number of learners
• boost capacity – increase the delivery potential of providers
• improve standards.
As good teachers are a pre-requisite for success, new teaching standards have been developed to promote the professionalism of the sector. At the same time, rigorous quality standards have been put in place and materials developed to support the implementation of the new infrastructure.
